Hugh Jackman has said that he was really done with the Wolverine character after Logan (2017)
Line of Events
Deadpool is offered a spot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the Time Variance Authority, but instead recruits a variant of Wolverine to save his universe from extinction. He later said that he regretted this statement after seeing the first Deadpool film and expressed to Ryan his interest in seeing the two characters meet on the big screen. When asked why he chose to return for this film, he simply said, “I just wanted to do it and I felt it in my gut,” adding that he wanted to have the best time possible on a film set with Ryan Reynolds. Similarly, Reynolds has wanted to work alongside Jackman since the first Deadpool film and was sad when he (Jackman) retired from the role. As Wolverine and Deadpool make their odyssey in the Honda Odyssey, the car’s clock advances three hours during the conversation.

I really enjoyed this movie, and I think both casual and diehard fans will be pleased. It’s not perfect, but it’s still a lot of fun.
Despite the potential baggage of its expansive continuity, Deadpool and Wolverine works as a standalone work
There’s a temptation these days for movies that aren’t perfect to be seen as a disappointment, and I hope that’s not the case here. The Deadpool and Wolverine team-up has been talked about ever since the 2009 disaster movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The film aims to strike a balance between being accessible to casual viewers while also satisfying die-hard fans of the characters. However, the film also faces the challenge of navigating the intricate and complex web of continuity that exists within the Marvel Universe. With nearly 50 (!) films in its continuity (not counting the TV series and Sony films), the Deadpool and Wolverine film had to carefully thread the needle to ensure that it honored established lore while also providing a fresh and engaging story.
